Lobos Fall to Wolfpack in Reno
Nov. 10, 2012
The Lobos dropped their third meet of the season earlier today in snow covered Reno losing to the Wolfpack by a final score of 160.5 to 139.5. It was a tough day for the team as they had a disqualification in the first event of the day and the divers failed to place an athlete in first place for the first time all season.
In the first event of the day, the 200 yard medley relay, the usually strong team of Stelicia Flores, Ashley Blanchette, Jorgi Hobson and Marissa Campbell was DQ'd. The penalty was a blow for the Lobos as this team is reliable for UNM and usually brings in points for the team.
Julia Carroll, Lindsey Morris, Samantha Moss and Shayla King delivered for UNM however and finished second with a time of 1:48.53. They were followed by the team of Amber Amr, Kristin Walker, Lauren Tininenko and Sarah Weihe as they finished third in 1:51.94.
The 1,000 yard freestyle also saw a pair of Lobos finish one after another. Taylor McGregor was third with a time of 11:06.60 and senior Alyssa Keill followed her with a fourth place finish after turning in a time of 1:14.97.
The strong events for the Lobos today were the 100 yard backstroke, 100 yard breaststroke, 200 yard butterfly, 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard fly. All of those events were swept by New Mexico.
The 100 yard back was won by Stelicia Flores who swam the event in 57.30. Amr and Caroll also swam solid times of 59.42 and 1:00.03, respectively and scored for UNM.
Senior Morris also placed first in her event: the 100 yard breaststroke. She touched the wall in 1:06.96 and was followed by Blanchette who was a close second with a time of 1:07.66.
Hobson had perhaps the best day for the Lobos as she came in first in both the 100 and 200 yard fly events and was a part of the first place 200 yard free relay team. Her time in the 200 was 2:07.32 and in the 100 she was first to touch the wall in 56.37. Hobson then team up with King, Blanchette and Campbell to take the top spot in the relay with a time of 1:37.06.
Campbell was the fifth Lobo to take first after swimming the 50 yard free in 24.62 to place first.
Off the boards it was an off day as no Lobo took first place in either event. Off the 1 meter Michole Timm had the highest finish for the Cherry and Silver after tallying a score of 293.63 that put her in third place. Megan Harper was behind her in fourth with 277.73 points.
Aubrey Bush had the best performance for New Mexico as she came in second off the 3 board with a score of 323.25. Timm was fourth with 299.70.
The Lobos return to the Duke City where they will train and get break. The swimmers are free of competition for the next month until they travel to Las Vegas for the UNLV invitational on Dec. 15-17. The divers have a short turnaround as they travel to Tucson, Ariz. For the Wildcat Diving Invitational taking place Nov. 15-17.
