Scherer and Crespo Pegged Scholar-Athletes for January
Feb. 1, 2012
FORT WORTH -- TCU has named women's rifle player Sarah Scherer and men's swimmer Edgar Crespo its Scholar Athletes of the Month for January.
Scherer led the Horned Frogs to victories over previously unbeaten teams in Kentucky and West Virginia to stretch their regular season winning steak to 27. The junior from Fort Worth teamed up with Sarah Beard with a pair of 590's in the smallbore portion to lead all scorers in the defeat of the Wildcats.
The next week's match against the Mountaineers proved to be more of the same, as Scherer paced all scorers with a 589 in smallbore as the Frogs held four of the top five shooters in that category. On the season, Scherer leads her squad in air rifle, smallbore, and aggregate totals.
Crespo, of Panama City, Panama, ended his collegiate swimming career on a high note with several strong performances. The senior business major clocked a 55.44 time in the 100-breast in San Diego to give the Frogs a victory.
The next week, in his final home meet, Crespo recorded a 55.82 in the 100-breast and a 2:03.26 in the 200-breast for individual wins in both events. In his career at TCU, Crespo never lost a dual meet in the 100-breast.
