Nine MW Swimmers Invited to NCAA National Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Nine Mountain West swimmers have received invitations to the 2013 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, March 21-23, at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. It is the most swimmers invited to the national finals in MW history. Twenty-one divers will be competing in NCAA Zones on March 14-16 at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., for the chance to advance to the finals at Indianapolis.

Six Mountain West teams had swimmers invited to the national finals. 2013 MW champion San Diego State leads the group with three invitees, while UNLV has two. Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and Nevada each have one invitation. 2013 MW Swimmer of the Year Mikaela Macklin leads the trio from SDSU. Macklin, a junior, will swim three events - 200-yard individual medley, 400-yard individual medley and 200-yard breaststroke - while Aztec seniors Leona Jennings (200-yard backstroke) and Katelyn Weddle (100-yard breaststroke) will each swim one event. Colorado State senior Breann Fuller is the only other swimmer invited in multiple individual events, competing in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke races.

UNLV's Katelyne Herrington, a junior and the league's only repeat invitee from 2012, will compete in the 100-yard butterfly and Rebel senior Carmen Robb will participate in the 100-yard backstroke. Boise State junior Rachel Heaney is scheduled to compete in the 200-yard butterfly, while Fresno State senior Danielle Yoho (50-yard) and Nevada senior Mengjiao Mi (1650-yard) will swim freestyle events.

San Diego State and UNLV will bring additional swimmers for relay teams that have qualified for Indianapolis. The Aztecs hold qualifying times in the 200-yard medley relay (1:37.93) and provisional times in the 400-yard medley relay (3:35.60), 400-yard freestyle relay (3:18.97) and 800-yard freestyle relay (7:10.65). The Rebels also have a qualifying time in the 200 medley relay (1:38.11) and provisional times in the 400 medley relay (3:36.67) and 400 freestyle relay (3:18.74).

Of the 21 divers that qualified for NCAA Zones, San Diego State will send the largest contingent, five, to Colorado Springs - Kelsey Bean, Chandler Marshall, Anna Steiner, Ashley Stott and Rafaella Suarez. Colorado State and Nevada will send three representatives each, including 2013 MW Diver of the Year Stephanie Hansen, representing the Wolf Pack.
