Michole Timm Heads to Indianapolis for NCAA Championships

March 19, 2013

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - For the second straight season a diver will be representing the University of New Mexico at the 2013 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by IUPUI in Indianapolis.

Michole Timm is the Lobo with the task of going up against the best divers in the country and representing for the Cherry and Silver. One of a total of 41 divers, Timm will be diving off the 3-meter springboard. She is one of only two divers from Mountain West schools to make it this far.

The sophomore from Sauk Rapids, Minn., qualified for the championships after posting a total overall score of 641.00 (318.80 in prelims and 322.20 during the final round) to place her in third and send her on to the "Big Dance".

Diving Coach Abel Sanchez has spoken all year long on the importance and magnitude of sending a diver on to post-season competition, and in a year that saw six of his eight divers go down to injuries, having Timm reach this level is indeed a big deal.

"It was a tough year for us, but our two healthy girls (Megan Harper and Timm) really stepped it up," Sanchez said. "They are two specials divers who have the potential and talent to do great things."

Timm is coming off a great season in which she was named MW All-Conference for the second straight season, and reached the podium at the 2013 MW Swimming and Diving Championships off the 1-meter board with a score of 305.64. Surprisingly, off the 3-meter board she was fourth with a score of 321.72.

The 2012-2013 two-time MW Diver of the Week has progressed significantly in her second year under Sanchez. Last year she finished 5th and 6th off the 1- and 3-meter with scores of 261.70 and 260.60, respectively. She qualified for NCAA Zones but missed making the cut after finishing 21st off the 1-meter board with a score of 246.35 and 33rd off the 3-meter tallying 239.05 points.

"Michole has come a long way," said Sanchez. "Like I said last season, she's strong as an ox and extremely talented. She's only a sophomore and has a tremendous amount of promise."

This year, Timm is set to compete on Friday, March 22. The field is made up of all 41 divers who qualified out of Zones; competing in alphabetical order, Timm will dive 39th. In the 3-meter board field, Samantha Pickens of Arizona, Jodie MCGroarty of the University of Tennesse, Knoxville, Margaret Keefer of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, Danielle Cecco of UConn and Logan Kline of Virginia Tech are all competing this year.

Pickens, who is making her fourth straight appearance and is a three-time All-American for the Wildcats finished 3rd at last year's championships with a score of 325.75.

Competition off the boards begins Thursday at 1:30 p.m. with the 1-meter board, 3-meter begins Friday at 1:30 p.m. as well.
