Nevada Wins Several Events at Blue and Orange Opener

The University of Nevada track and field team had several wins and other strong finishes in the Blue and Orange Opener hosted by Boise State over the weekend.
Senior Deborah Amoah led Nevada with a first place finish in the triple jump and second place finish in the 60 meter hurdles. Amoah recorded a 12.38m mark in the triple jump, which is the top finish in the Mounatin West this season and thirteenth best mark nationally. The senior clocked in at 8.87 in the 60 meter hurdles.
Senior Angelica Earls nearly eclipsed her program record of 7.45 in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.49 to take second place. Senior Samantha Calhoun trailed closely behind Earls to finish third with a time of 7.54. Calhoun’s time places her third on Nevada’s all-time list. Calhoun won the 300 meter dash event with a time of 39.56. Earls took second in the same event with a time of 40.59. Junior Christina Smith placed first in the 600 meter dash, clocking in at 1:37.71. Sophomore Anne Underwood finished third at 1:38.78.
From the throws group, junior Kerri Simmons had strong marks in the shot put and weighted throw events. Simmons won the shot put event with a mark of 14.61m, which is good for the program’s third best distance. The junior placed second in the weighted throw with a mark of 16.28 for Nevada’s seventh best all-time mark.
The team will participate in the Bronco Invitational hosted by Boise State next weekend in Nampa, Idaho.
