Feb. 3, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field program closed out the first day of the New Mexico Classic with another first- and third-place finish in the weight throw, and an 800m participant set a new Albuquerque Convention Center collegiate record time.

Amanda Bingson and Danielle Rios finished first and third, respectively, last week in the weight throw at Northern Arizona's Mountain T's Invitational, and the pair had identical results Friday afternoon. Bingson won the event with a toss of 62-6.50 (19.06m), while Rios followed closely behind with a distance of 60-0.25 (18.29m).

Christine Lowe finished second overall in the 600m, but was the first collegian to cross the line with a new convention center time of 1:33.11, which was also one of the best times recorded in the event in UNLV indoor history.

The squad had many more top-five finishes led by Lauren Petersen in the 5000m and the distance medley relay squad's third-place showings. Peterson had a final time of 18:15.41, while the quartet's (Laura Affeld, Brett Zorich, Kelsey Williamson and Alison Bartosch) was 12:08.72.

In the 200m, Emily Blok (24.56) and Secoral Yanez (24.78) finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth, respectively. Corey Honeycutt was fourth overall in the 600m (1:36.62).

Ashley Henry finished seventh in the high jump with a leap of 5-6.00 (1.68m).

The Rebels return to the Albuquerque Convention Center for the second and final day of the Classic.
