Field Events Highlight TCU Performance at Texas A&M Invite

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The TCU track and field program picked up a pair of field event wins at the Texas A&M Invitational Saturday. The meet serves as the final tune-up before the Horned Frogs get set for the 2012 Mountain West Indoor Championships in two weeks.
Junior Cameron Tabor continued his successful indoor campaign, winning his third shot put title of the year. The Norman, Okla., native enjoyed a top toss of 57-11 ¾ feet (17.67m) on his third attempt and never looked back. All three of Tabor’s shot put victories this year have come inside Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium as he also claimed the event at the Texas A&M Reveille Invite (Dec. 10) and Texas 10-Team Invite (Jan. 14). Tabor also claimed sixth place honors in the weight throw Saturday.
On the women’s side, senior Whitney Gipson and freshman Lorraine Ugen took the top two spots in the long jump, respectively. Gipson, a product of North Richland Hills, Texas nailed her best leap of 20-10 ¾ feet (6.37m) on her first attempt to hold to lead from start to finish, while Ugen pounced to the tune of 20-7 feet (6.27m) twice in six tries for runner-up honors.
Junior Kelsey Samuels chimed in for second place in the women’s shot put, boasting a top mark of 51-1 ½ feet (15.58m) on her third toss. The Mesquite, Texas product also earned fifth-place recognition in the weight throw. Freshman Megan Smith followed Samuel in the shot put with fourth-place honors.
From the oval, TCU competed well in the women’s 1600-meter relay as the team of sophomore Briyanni Thomas, junior Quinterra Charles and freshmen Neferteria Hall and Ashley Collins earned fourth-place honors with a time of 3:38.94. The quartet came 0.50 from earning runner-up status.
Other Frogs that turned in solid performances Saturday included junior Tricia Terry third place finish in the mile run and Thomas claiming fifth overall in the 800 meters. Collins and Charles finished fifth and sixth, respectively in the 400 meters.
TCU will now get set for the 2012 Mountain West Indoor Championships, Feb. 23-25, in Albuquerque, N.M.
