Cale Simmons Matches Academy Pole Vault Record at Texas Relays
March 31, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas - Clearing a career-best 18'0½", junior Cale Simmons matched the Academy pole vault record as the track and field team wrapped up competition at the 85th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Saturday, March 31, in Austin, Texas.
Matching the best clearance of the day in the "A" section, Simmons improved his outdoor-best distance nearly three inches to 18'0½". He becomes just the second Falcon to clear an 18-foot bar in outdoor action, joining former standout Paul Gensic, who first accomplished the feat in 2004. With his clearance, Simmons now owns a share of both the indoor and outdoor Academy records in the pole vault.
With a time of 51.93, senior Bryce Bergman matched his best score in the 400-meter hurdles to place sixth in the event finals. Bergman matched the score he clocked during Friday's semifinal competition.
Classmate James Cole placed 11th in the "A" section of the discus throw with a mark of 169'5", while fellow senior Paige Blackburn recorded a season-debut distance of 43'9¼" in the shot put to finish 16th in the "A" division.
Air Force returns to the Academy next week to dedicate the newly renovated Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex. The Falcons will host the AF Outdoor Combined Events Meet on Thursday-Friday (April 5-6), before hosting the first Air Force Relays on Saturday, April 7.
