Air Force Duo Wraps Up First Day of Mountain West Action
May 8, 2013
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Two members of the Air Force track and field team wrapped up the first day of competition at the 2013 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, May 8. Sophomore Evan McDowell is currently in third in the decathlon, while senior Lesly Torres is in sixth after the first day of the heptathlon.
After four events of the heptathlon, Torres is currently in sixth with 2,911 points. That total, the second-best first-day total of her career, was backed by a career-best distance in the shot put and season-best marks in the 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash.
Torres' best event finish came in the high jump, where she cleared the 5'3¼" bar on her first attempt to tie for fourth. She improved her overall distance in the shot put by over three feet to place sixth with a career-best mark of 34'2¼". Ninth-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles (season-best 15.04) and 200-meter dash (26.30) book-ended the day for Torres, who amassed 2,911 points.
Highlighted by an event win in the 400-meter dash, McDowell concluded the first day of decathlon action in third place with 3,529 points.
The sophomore crossed the finish line of the 400-meter dash in a time of 51.51 to win that event. McDowell also added a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100-meter dash (11.42) and high jump (season-best 6'5"), while collecting career-best marks in the long jump (21'7¼") and shot put (35'3¼") to finish third and fourth, respectively, in those two events.
A hamstring injury on the opening event ended the decathlon early for Michael Tibbs. The senior, who has been plagued by injury throughout the year, concluded his decathlon career with two all-conference selections and the fifth-best decathlon total (7158) in Academy history.
McDowell opens the final five events of the decathlon tomorrow (Thursday, May 9) at 11:00 a.m., while Torres returns to the track for the final three events of the heptathlon at 11:30 a.m.
