Mann in Second After First Four Heptathlon Events at MW
May 8, 2013
LAS VEGAS - Wyoming multi-event athletes Jenna Mann and Sabina Sandberg came out strong in the first four heptathlon events to open the 2013 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday afternoon at UNLV's Partridge Stadium in Las Vegas.
Mann is currently in second place with 3,176 points while Sandberg is in 10th place with 2,810 after the first day. San Diego State's Allison Reaser earned the top spot with 3,380 points with one more day of combined events to go.
"I thought Jenna and Sabina came out and did their best, which is all we can ask of them," said Wyoming assistant coach Shaun Meinecke. "They looked strong in several events and it is always nice to earn personal bests. What's most important now is that they get a good night's rest so they come out ready to finish strong tomorrow and get as many points as possible."
Mann, a Bayview Crescent, Saskatchewan, native, earned two career-best marks and tied another en route to her second-place standing. After placing second in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.92 seconds (990 points), the junior tied a personal-best 5'-2.25" in the high jump to place sixth and 712 points. In the shot put, she achieved a personal-best 35'-6.75" for fifth place and 585 points before placing second in the 200-meter dash in a personal-best 24.98 and earning 889 points.
Her previous best shot put was a 34'-0.50," while her former best in the 200-meter was a 25.50 from earlier this season. She will look to overcome the top spot in the multi-events Thursday and achieve a new personal-best point tally, which is presently 5,074 from the Mt. SAC Relays three weeks ago.
Sandberg earned three new personal bests Wednesday afternoon to go with a first-place finish in the high jump. The Stockholm, Sweden, native placed 12th in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.39 seconds for 791 points before her first-place mark in the high jump at 5'-5.75" for 818 points. In the shot put, she achieved a ninth-place distance of 32'-4.25," topping her prior best of 31'-2," for 520 points. Sandberg ended the meet with a 27.37 in the 200-meter dash, giving her 681 points and beating her previous personal-best time of 27.65.
Mann and Sandberg resume the heptathlon Thursday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. to finish the combined events with the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run.
Friday's open competition begins at 9 a.m. with the track events and the field events are slated for 11 a.m. Saturday's action begins at 9 a.m. with the running events while the field events resume at 10 a.m. with the hammer throw. The awards ceremony is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. that day to conclude the meet.
