Air Force Pair in Top Four After First Day of Decathlon

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - With a career-best first-day total of 3,709 points, Air Force junior Michael Tibbs is in third place after the first five events of the decathlon competition at the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by the Academy, on Wednesday, May 9.
Highlighted by a runner-up finish in the shot put (40'7½"), Tibbs improved his first day total by 200 points to finish in third. The junior placed third in the long jump with a career-best distance of 23'0½" ... a personal improvement of nearly two feet. He also finished fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.27), sixth in the 400-meter dash (career-best 50.89) and seventh in the high jump (6'1½").
Freshman Evan McDowell earned a pair of top-three finishes to finish the first day of competition in fourth. In the final two events, McDowell cleared a career-best 6'7½" to take second in the high jump and added a personal-best 49.64 to finish third in the 400-meter dash. He also placed fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.34), eighth in the long jump (21'0¾") and ninth in the shot put (30'9¾").
Boise State's Kurt Felix currently leads the decathlon with 4,201 points, while New Mexico's Richard York is in second with 3,933 points. Wyoming's Brandon Douglass rounds out the top five, behind Tibbs and McDowell, with 3,564 points.
On the women's side, senior Phaelen French is currently in eighth-place of the heptathlon with 2,314 points. French picked up a pair of seventh-place finishes in the shot put (season-best 31'2½") and high jump (4'10½"), while taking eighth in both the 100-meter hurdles (17.26) and 200-meter dash (27.88).
San Diego State's Allison Reaser currently leads the heptathlon with 3,355 points, while Colorado State's Cate Brus and Boise State's Alexi Morton sit in second (3,084) and third (3,038), respectively.
Action continues at the MW Championships tomorrow (May 10) at the Academy's Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex. The decathlon begins at noon, while the heptathlon will get underway at 12:30 p.m. In addition, the men's hammer throw will take place at 5 p.m.
