May 11, 2013
LAS VEGAS - Five Wyoming athletes earned all-conference honors and six UW Top 10 records were achieved Saturday to conclude the 2013 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships at UNLV's Partridge Stadium in Las Vegas.
The Cowboys finished in sixth place with 85 points while the Cowgirls placed eighth with 56 points. Air Force won the men's championship with 210 points while San Diego State topped the women's field with 182 points.
"I thought the athletes we traveled to compete here gave it their all and represented the program well," said Wyoming coach Bryan Berryhill. "The seniors have been great this year and had great performances throughout this meet. Moving forward, we know we can do better and it begins with recruiting to add some depth to the team so we can be challengers in every event."
Junior Jenna Mann, who placed third in the heptathlon Thursday, achieved third place in the 100-meter hurdles finals in 13.66 seconds for all-conference accolades and six team points. In the men's 110-meter hurdles, senior Brandon Douglass came in second for all-MW honors in 14.12 seconds and provided eight Cowboy points.
Senior Jaymes Talkington placed third in the men's triple jump at 49'-1.50" for all-conference honors as he beat his former best of 48'-7.50" to move improve his UW No. 9 all-time best distance and earn six team points. Senior Joe Plante finished third in the hammer throw at 189'-8" for All-MW honors and six Cowboy points.
Senior Mollie Dahl earned All-MW honors for the first time in the shot put with a second-place throw of 50'-4.75" for eight Cowgirl points.
"Mollie competed extremely hard and went for broke to try to get the title," said associate head coach Paul Barrett. "It was the second-best throw of her career and only the second time reaching the elite 50-foot mark."
Junior Sam Kee performed well in the women's 400-meter dash with a fourth-place time of 55.40, beating her previous best of 55.77 and moving from No. 9 to No. 8 on the UW all-time list for the event. The 400-meter hurdles duo of Taylor Gardner (59.41) and Diana Long (59.53) both earned personal bests to each move up a spot, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, on the UW all-time bests list.
The women's 4x100 relay team of Audrey West, Kee, Gardner and Kereston Thomas achieved sixth place with a time of 46.16, Wyoming's 10th-best all-time mark for the event. The 4x400 squad of Long, Gardner, McKenzie Brogan and Kee finished fourth in 3:43.77, which is UW's ninth-best all-time mark in the event.
Select Wyoming athletes will compete next weekend at the Colorado School of Mines' Last Chance Meet to try to earn NCAA qualifying marks. The NCAA West Preliminaries take place May 23-25 in Austin, Texas.
