Jan. 15, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — University of New Mexico senior Amber Menke has been named Mountain West Women's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week for meets contested from Jan. 11-14. This is the first such recognition of her career.
Menke, who returned to competition after redshirting the 2012 outdoor season, won the pole vault at the Lumberjack Team Challenge in Flagstaff, Ariz., with a clearance of 12-8 1/4 (3.87m).
The Albuquerque, N.M., product currently ranks first in the event in the Mountain West and checks in at 23rd in the NCAA. She owns the University of New Mexico's record in the indoor pole vault with a career best of 13-5 3/4 (4.11m), set last year at the MW Indoor Championships in Albuquerque.
This is the first indoor athlete of the week honor for New Mexico since Ashley Gibson on Feb. 16, 2010. Prior to Menke's selection, the Lobos had been recognized with a MW Indoor Athlete of the Week just four times, and only twice since 2003.
Air Force sophomore Joey Uhle received the weekly honor on the men's side.
