Nevada Heads to Bronco Invitational

The University of Nevada track and field team will travel to Nampa, Idaho to compete at the Bronco Invitational this weekend hosted by Boise State.

In addition to Boise State, Nevada will face athletes from UC Irvine, Utah, Washington State, as well as NCAA Division II opponents Cal State Stanislaus, MSU-Billings, Northwest Nazarene and Westminster (UT).

Field events will start at 9 a.m., with track events kicking off at 10:15 a.m.


“Our goals for the Bronco Invitational are to improve and build from last week,” head coach Shantel Twiggs said. “We have been able to put in another solid week of training, where we placed a strong emphasis on competition effort. We should see some impressive marks over the weekend.”


Nevada returns to the Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho after competing in the Blue and Orange Opener held at the same venue last week. Senior Deborah Amoah led Nevada with a first place finish in the triple jump and second place finish in the 60 meter hurdles. Amoah recorded a 12.38m mark in the triple jump, which is the top finish in the Mountain West this season and thirteenth best mark nationally. The senior clocked in at 8.87 in the 60 meter hurdles.

Senior Angelica Earls nearly eclipsed her program record of 7.45 in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.49 to take second place. Senior Samantha Calhoun trailed closely behind Earls to finish third with a time of 7.54. Junior Christina Smith placed first in the 600 meter dash, clocking in at 1:37.71. Sophomore Anne Underwood finished third at 1:38.78.

From the throws group, junior Kerri Simmons had strong marks in the shot put and weighted throw events. Simmons won the shot put event with a mark of 14.61m, which is good for the program’s third best distance. The junior placed second in the weighted throw with a mark of 16.28 for Nevada’s seventh best all-time mark.
