Five Falcons Wrap Up NWU Invitational

LINCOLN, Neb. - Less than an hour after completing a nine-hour bus ride from Colorado, five members of the Air Force track and field team competed in the 1000-meter run at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational on Friday, Jan. 18.
Sophomore Rebecca Esselstein won the women's 1000-meter race with a time of 2:55.29 - a mark just shy of the Academy standard of 2:54.62. Air Force swept the top two spots of the 13-runner event, as junior Annette Eichenberger took second in 2:58.66. The pair easily distanced themselves from the field, as the third-place finisher clocked in at 3:07.45.
The men claimed three of the top six spots in 28-competitor men's 1000-meter run. Making his first appearance of the season, junior Jake Hawkins placed third overall (and second amongst collegiate competitors), with a time of 2:31.64. Freshman Grant Caswell clocked a time of 2:33.73 to finish fifth overall and fourth in the collegiate field, while junior Matt Caldwell placed sixth (fifth collegiately) with a time of 2:34.84.
The remainder of the team will return to the Bob Devaney Sports Center tomorrow (Jan. 19) for the Nebraska adidas Classic - the Falcons' first scoring meet of the season.
