SDSU's Ashley Named MW T&F Co-Athlete of the Week
Jan. 31, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State senior Whitney Ashley (Moreno Valley, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Co-Athlete of the Week, the league announced today. It is the first weekly honor for Ashley.
Ashley, who shares the honor with UNLV's Amanda Bingson, won both the shot put and the weight throw for the second consecutive week to lead the Aztecs to a second-place finish at the Air Force Team Challenge. In the shot put, Ashley defeated 33 other entrants with an indoor school record throw of 54 feet, 6 ¾ inches. It was the second straight week she broke her own record, and also was the second-best mark in conference history and the ninth best in the nation this year.
Ashley also won the weight throw, beating 24 others with a mark of 60-07.50. Although it wasn't a personal best, which she set last week by breaking her own school record, it beat the runner-up finisher by more than three feet. Currently, Ashley is ranked fourth in the Mountain West and 42nd in the nation with last week's throw of 61-07.00.
Ashley's co-athlete of the week award gives SDSU two in two tries after sophomore Shanieka Thomas won the award last Tuesday following her performances at the team's season-opening meet in Nampa, Idaho.
San Diego State heads to Flagstaff, Ariz., for the Northern Arizona (NAU) Open on Saturday.
