Thomas Named MW Indoor T&F Athlete of the Week
Feb. 5, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior Shanieka Thomas has been named the Mountain West Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced today. It is the third career MW weekly honor for the St. Andrew, Jamaica, native and second in two opportunities this season (also won it on Jan. 22).
On Saturday at the New Mexico Classic, Thomas bested 21 other entrants in the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet, 4 inches (13.51 meters). The mark is the best in the country this season, the second-best indoor mark in school history and easily beat runner-up Toni Smith, who was the only other competitor to break 13 meters (42-09.00).
Thomas was also fifth of 22 in the long jump in 18-05.25 (5.62m) and sixth of 37 in the 400-meter dash (56.85 seconds). The 400 was a personal best and the eighth-fastest time in the MW this season.
Thomas and the Aztecs compete at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M., for the third straight meet on Feb. 8-9 with the prestigious Don Kirby Elite Invitational.
