Feb. 12, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force senior Cale Simmons and New Mexico junior Luke Caldwell have earned Mountain West Men's Co-Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week, while San Diego State junior Shanieka Thomas was selected the MW Women's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week for meets contested from Feb. 7-10. It is the first MW weekly honor this season for Simmons and Caldwell, and the third of Simmons' career. It is the third weekly honor in four weeks for Thomas, and fourth for her career.
Simmons, a native of Rocklin, Calif., finished second in the pole vault at the Air Force Team Challenge on Feb. 9. His clearance of 18'-2'' broke his own Academy record and set a new meet heigth. He has the top clearance in the MW this season, and ranks third in the nation.
Caldwell, from Betchworth, England, finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run at the Husky Classic on Feb. 9. His time of 13:40.39 set a new MW record, which was held by Air Force's Justin Tyner (13:41.26 in 2010). He also established a new school record, topping the 13:43.20 time posted by Chris Barnicle in 2010. Caldwell's time leads the MW this season and is seventh-best nationally. Caldwell, who hadn't run the 5,000 in nearly two years, lowered his previous best by nearly a minute (14:37.89).
Thomas, from St. Andrew, Jamaica, won the triple jump at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on Feb. 8 with a distance of 46'-2.50''. The mark not only set a new meet, San Diego State and MW record, it is the sixth-best indoor triple jump in NCAA history. According to the USTFCCCA, it is also the third-best distance in a non-NCAA Championship meet. Thomas, who leads the MW and the nation in the triple jump this year, won the event by more than five feet. Her mark would've won 14 of the last 15 NCAA indoor championships, including the last four. She also ran a leg of the 4x400-meter relay as the Aztecs finished seventh with a time of 3:44.41, which is the fifth-fastest indoor time in school history and is the top time in the MW this season.
