Shanieka Thomas Wins Third MW Honor of the Season
Feb. 12, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior Shanieka Thomas has been named the Mountain West Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced today. It is the fourth career MW weekly honor for the St. Andrew, Jamaica, native and third in three opportunities this season (also won it on Jan. 22 and Feb. 5).
Thomas posted the sixth-best indoor triple jump mark in NCAA history with a dominating win at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on Friday night. According to the USTFCCCA, Thomas' triple jump mark of 46 feet, 2 ½ inches (14.08 meters) was the sixth best in NCAA history and the third best in a non-NCAA Championship meet. It is also the seventh-best mark in the world this year, according to IAAF.org.
Her mark won the meet by more than five feet (runner up was 41-01.75) and bettered Karoline Koehler's previous school record of 44-10.75, set in 2010, by more than a foot. Additionally, it was a Mountain West record, a Don Kirby Elite Invitational record (collegiate and non-collegiate) and extended her national lead this year.
Thomas' mark of 46-02.50 would have won the last four NCAA indoor championships and 14 of the past 15 titles.
Thomas also ran a leg in the 4x400-meter relay as the team finished seventh in 3:44.41, which is the fifth-fastest indoor time in school history and the fastest in the MW this year
The Aztecs travel to the Mountain West Indoor Championships from Feb. 21-23 in Nampa, Idaho.
