Feb. 29, 2012

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The Rebel track & field program will compete in its first outdoor meet of the 2012 season this weekend, March 2-3, in its own UNLV Track Classic held at Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr-Smith Field. Seven women's collegiate programs will compete in the two-day meet, while many world-class athletes will participate as individually.

Besides UNLV, Colorado Mesa, Montana State Billings, San Diego, Southern Utah, Utah Valley and Wyoming will have members of their programs competing this weekend.

"After a strong showing in the indoor season we are ready to transition to the outdoor season and capitalize on our strengths," said head coach Yvonne Scott-Wade. "This meet is an early season one that gives us a great opportunity to work on the things we need to so that we can get ready to compete at a high level this season when it counts."

Not only will there be collegiate athletes participating, but many athletes with international experience will descend upon Las Vegas individually to compete, as well. World champion gold medalists Rodney Martin, Leroy Dixon, Greg Nixon and Lionel Larry will compete in the men's portion of the meet as well as Brian Chaput. Martin, Dixon and Chaput are also former Olympians. On the women's side, Shevon Stoddart, Uhunoma Osazuwa and Dominique Maloy will take part in action too. Osazuwa and Maloy are both NCAA All-Americans and local products from Clark and Pahrump High Schools, respectively.

Friday's action begins at 2:30 pm with the women's distance medley. The first field event is the javelin, which slated for a 3:00 pm start. Saturday starts bright and early at 9:00 am with the women's hammer throw.
