Gipson Honored By Sports Illustrated

March 7, 2012

TCU senior long jumper Whitney Gipson has been included in this week’s issue of Sports Illustrated as part of the “Faces in the Crowd” section for her record-breaking performance at the 2012 Mountain West Championships.

A native of North Richland Hills, Texas, Gipson is listed as the No. 1 long jumper in the country, having marked 21-10 ¾ feet (6.67m) to win the Mountain West title and snap the TCU and championship meet record for the event. Gipson scored 18 points at the MW Championships meet with a seventh-place showing in the triple jump and third-place nod in the 200. She also won the long jump event at the Texas 10-Team Invitational and Texas A&M Invite earlier this season.

Gipson, a four-time All-American for the Frogs, was recently honored as the Women’s Field Athlete of the Year for the South Central region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

TCU will have four athletes, including Gipson, competing at the 2012 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in Nampa, Idaho.
