Falcons Open Outdoor Season at ASU Invitational

The Air Force track and field team opens the 2012 outdoor season at the Arizona State Invitational this weekend (March 23-24) in Tempe. The Falcons face off against nine other programs during the two-day meet at Joe Sellah Track at Sun Angel Stadium.

MEET INFORMATION
The Falcons' outdoor season opener begins on Friday, March 23, with the women's and men's hammer throw (1 p.m.) and the women's and men's 5000-meter run. The remainder of the events will take place on Saturday, March 24 (complete schedule is below). Joining Air Force and the host Sun Devils at Sun Angel Stadium are Cal State-Los Angeles, Iowa State, Kansas State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Utah (women only) and Western State.

SATURDAY SCHEDULING 101
10 a.m.: Women's Discus Throw, Men's Discus Throw; 1 p.m.: Women's High Jump, Men's High Jump; 2 p.m.: Women's Pole Vault, Men's Pole Vault; 4 p.m.: Men's Javelin Throw, Women's Javelin Throw; 4 p.m.: Long Jump (men and women will compete simultaneously); 5 p.m.: 100/110-Meter Hurdles, 1000-Meter Exhibition, 4x100-Meter Relay, 1500-Meter Run, 400-Meter Dash, 100-Meter Dash, 800-Meter Run, 400-Meter Hurdles, 200-Meter Dash, 3000-Meter Steeplechase, 4x400-Meter Relay (the women will run first in all races); 5 p.m.: Women's Shot Put, Men's Shot Put; 7 p.m.: Triple Jump (men and women will compete simultaneously).

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON...
After a five-year absence, Air Force will once again host outdoor track and field competitions with the renovation of the Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex. The Falcons, who open the home slate with the Air Force Combined Events Meet on April 6-7, will also host the Air Force Relays (April 7), the Front Range Classic (May 4) and the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 9-12).

WHO'S BACK
The Falcons outdoor roster includes three Academy record holders (Rob Drye, hammer throw; Emily Cotharn, 400-meter hurdles; Kassie Gurnell, triple jump), two defending Mountain West championships (Drye, hammer throw; Bryce Bergman, 400-meter hurdles) and seven all-conference selections (Bergman, Paige Blackburn, James Cole, Drye, Mikey Lauritzen, Cale Simmons, Michael Tibbs). In addition, Cole earned All-America honorable mention honors in the discus throw, after advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2011.

LEADING THE WAY
Eight Falcons will serve as captains of the 2011-12 Air Force track and field team. Bryce Bergman, Rob Drye, Jim Walmsley and Alex Zubey represent the men's team, while Paige Blackburn, Emily Cotharn, Auriele Fain and Kimber Shealy captain the women's squad.

Air Force will travel to Austin, Texas, for the 85th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on March 28-31.
