April 2, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force senior Cale Simmons was named Mountain West Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week, while New Mexico junior Charlotte Arter was selected MW Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week for meets held March 27 to April 1. It is the fifth-career (second outdoor) MW weekly honor for Simmons, while for Arter, it is her first-career MW weekly award.

Simmons, from Rocklin, Calif., cleared a career-best 18'-4.75'' (5.61m) in the Pole Vault at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on March 29. In the process, he broke his own Academy record by three inches and set a new MW all-time mark. Simmons now holds the MW all-time and championship meet (18'-1.75'' at the 2012 MW Outdoor Championships) records. Simmons' clearance, which he set on his first attempt, leads the MW and ranks fourth in the NCAA this season.

Hailing from Carlisle, England, Arter was the third collegiate runner (fourth overall) to cross the finish line in the women's 1500 Meters at the Stanford Invitational on March 29. Her time of 4:19.03 broke the 28-year-old New Mexico record of 4:20.38, set by Kristi Leonard in 1985. Arter currently leads the MW in the 1500 Meters by over five seconds and has the fourth-fastest time in the nation.
