April 4, 2012
FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU senior Whitney Gipson was named MW Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week, the league office has announced.
Gipson posted the second-best women’s long jump performance in Mountain West history last weekend at the 85th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, leaping a wind-aided mark of 21’-10.75” (6.67m). Gipson hit her top jump on her third attempt to finish third overall in the field. Her mark currently ranks second in the Mountain West and second in the nation during the 2012 outdoor season.
The North Richland Hills, Texas native also took to the oval over the weekend, leading off the TCU 4x100 relay team to ninth-place honors at 45.35 seconds alongside junior Chaniqua Corinealdi, sophomore Veronica Jones and freshman Lorraine Ugen.
The Mountain West Female Indoor Athlete of the Year was competing for the first time since winning the NCAA indoor long jump title on March 9.
The Horned Frogs have garnered Mountain West accolades after every outdoor meet this spring. Junior Charles Silmon and Ugen accepted recognition after the TCU Invitational, while Silmon and Corinealdi were acknowledged following the Bobby Lane Invitational.
TCU will return to action this week as most of the team will compete at the North Texas Invitational in Denton, while three distance runners travel to run at the Stanford Invitational.
