COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Boise State senior Eetu Viitala and TCU junior Charles Silmon have been selected as the Mountain West Co-Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, while UNLV senior Amanda Bingson has been named MW Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week.
Viitala, a product of Kuortane, Finland, earned first-place honors in the men’s long jump at the UTEP Invite last weekend in El Paso, Texas, posting a career-best mark of 25’-8.00” (7.82m) to claim the individual title. Viitala’s leap ranks second in Mountain West history, second all-time at Boise State, and fifth in the NCAA during the 2012 outdoor season.
Silmon, hailing from Waco, Texas, helped secure three first-place finishes for TCU last weekend at the Spec Towns Invite in Athens, Ga. Silmon began by securing the individual crown in the men’s 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 10.28 seconds. He went on to capture first-place accolades in the men’s 200-meter dash with a seasonal-best time of 20.68. That time ranks first in the Mountain West this spring and 21st in the NCAA during the 2012 outdoor season. Silmon was also a part of TCU’s quartet that won the men’s 4x100-meter race with a time of 39.94.
Bingson won the women’s hammer throw title at the Randall Cunningham Invitational last weekend in Las Vegas, Nev., setting a new Myron Partridge Stadium record with a first-place toss of 228’-10.00” (69.75m). Bingson’s toss was only two inches shy of tying her program-record mark of 229’-0.00” (69.79m), which she posted during the 2011 outdoor season. A native of Las Vegas, Nev., Bingson’s toss ranks third all-time in MW history and first in the nation in 2012.
