Shanieka Thomas Named MW Women's Outdoor T&F AOW
April 23, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State's Shanieka Thomas has been named the Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced today. It is the fifth career weekly honor for Thomas and first-ever outdoor award.
Thomas, a junior from St. Andrew, Jamaica, broke the Mountain West record and school record in the invitational triple jump at the Mt. SAC Relays on Saturday with a leap of 45 feet, 1 ½ inches (13.75 meters). The mark was good enough for second out of the 11 elite athletes, trailing only 2011 USA Outdoor Championships runner-up finisher Crystal Manning. It is the second-best leap in the country this year.
The mark broke SDSU's previous best of Karoline Koehler (44-09.00) set in 2009 by more than four inches. Thomas, who already owns the indoor Mountain West and school record in the triple jump (46-02.00) and finished second in the event at the 2013 NCAA indoor championships and 2012 NCAA outdoor championships, landed the record jump on her third of six attempts. She also eclipsed Koehler's mark on two other of her attempts and tied it on another.
San Diego State, which is ranked 21st in the latest USTFCCCA poll, will split squads this weekend with Thomas and others heading to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia and the rest competing at the Triton Invitational in nearby La Jolla.
