Aztec Track and Field Set For UCSD's Triton Invite

In one of its final meets before the 2012 Mountain West Championships (May 9-12), the San Diego State track and field team heads across town to compete in UC San Diego's Triton Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
This weekend's competition will feature over 50 collegiate programs and 1,000 entries. Joining the Aztecs and host Tritons are perennial Division I powers Wisconsin, Georgia, Tennessee, Kansas and Auburn, among others. Additionally, a few 2008 Olympians will be competing at Triton Track and Field Stadium.
SDSU will send most of its squad to the meet, including program all-time top-10 performers Whitney Ashley, Jasmine Burrell, Alex Evans, Ellie Fanaika, Kelsy Hintz, Marianne Hogan, Josefine Koskinen, Allison Reaser and Holly Waseloff.
San Diego State has a host of athletes ranked among the top 48 in the NCAA West Region (the top 48 in every event but the heptathlon will advance to the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Meet in Austin, Texas from May 24-26)) heading into this weekend's meet. Shanieka Thomas is ranked second in the triple jump, Ashley is fourth in the discus throw and 11th in the shot put, Burrell is ninth in the discus and 38th in the shot put, Hintz is 24th in the pole vault, Reaser is 25th in the 400-meter hurdles, 35th in the 100 hurdles and 45th in the long jump, Evans is 26th in the long jump and Waseloff is 40th in the pole vault. Reaser is also 11th in the country in the heptathlon.
Ashley, Burrell and Ellie Fanaika will kick things off for the Aztecs at 10 a.m. PT Friday in the invitational hammer throw, while Ashley, Burrell and Brittany Gonter will close the day in the open discus at 4 p.m. PT. On Saturday, Hintz and Waseloff will get things going at 11 a.m. PT in the Leon T. Roach II Invitational Pole Vault. The two-day event ends for SDSU at 6 p.m. PT Saturday with Hogan running the 5,000 meters.

Tickets for the Triton Invitational can be purchased at the entrance to the Triton Track and Field Stadium on Saturday. Tickets are $5 for general admission, while children under the age of 7 get in free.
