COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State's Shanieka Thomas has been named the Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track & Field Co-Athlete of the Week, the league announced today. It is the second straight week she won the award, the second outdoor honor of her career and sixth career weekly accolade.
Thomas, a junior from St. Andrew Jamaica, won the triple jump championship at the Penn Relays on Friday with a leap of 44 feet, 8 inches (13.61 meters). Thomas beat Texas A&M runner-up LaQue Moen-Davis, who is currently ranked fourth in the nation, by more than a foot (44-08.00 to 43-05.00). Also in the elite field was No. 11 Thea LaFond of Maryland, No. 31 Imani Oliver of Princeton and No. 37 Keri Emmanuel of LSU, among others.
Thomas broke the Mountain West and school record in the triple jump the previous weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays in 45-01.50. She's a two-time runner-up in the event at the NCAA Championships (2013 indoor and 2012 outdoor).
The Aztecs, who moved up to No. 20 in the latest USTFCCCA poll, heads to Los Angeles this Saturday for the Occidental Invitational in the final meet before the Mountain West Championships (May 8-11).
