Moultrie, Caldwell Named MW Athletes of the Week

April 30, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico's track and field team claimed a pair of conference honors Tuesday as Josephine Moultrie and Luke Caldwell earned recognition from the Mountain West for their performances for meets held April 23-29.

Caldwell was selected for his first Mountain West Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week, while Moultrie earned MW Women's Outdoor Track & Field Co-Athlete of the Week, her first. Both were selected for indoor conference award each earlier this year.

Caldwell, a junior from Betchworth, England, clocked a personal best of 13 minutes, 29.94 seconds to take 15th overall and third collegiately in the fastest and final section of the men’s 5000-meter run at the Payton Jordan Invitational. He currently leads the Mountain West by over 30 seconds, while ranking third in the NCAA.

Caldwell also broke the old New Mexico record of 13:31.56 set in 2010 by Lee Emanuel with a clocking that shattered his old lifetime best of 13:40.39 set in February at the Husky Classic. He sits second in the history of the MW in the 5K.

Moultrie, a senior out of Glasgow, Scotland, clocked a time of 4:14.44 in the second heat of the women’s 1500 at the Payton Jordan Invitational to win the section and take ninth overall and fifth collegiately. She also set a new personal record, breaking her old lifetime best of 4:17.66 set in 2011.

She also leads the Mountain West and ranks ninth in the NCAA and fourth in the NCAA's West Region. She also ranks third all-time in Mountain West history in the metric mile.

San Diego State junior Shanieka Thomas shared the honor with Moultrie.

These are the third and fourth outdoor athlete of the week honors for New Mexico in 2013, as Charlotte Arter earned the women’s award on April 2 and Kendall Spencer took home the men’s honor on April 9.

The Lobos have tied program record for MW Outdoor Athlete of the Week at four, which was set three times previously in 2007, 2010 and 2012.

New Mexico will compete again when it travels to the Mountain West Outdoor Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., on May 8-11.
