May 3, 2013
SAN DIEGO -
The No. 20 San Diego State track and field team will compete at the Occidental Invitational on Saturday in its final meet before the Mountain West Championships.
Fourteen Aztecs are slated to participate in the meet, including Antonique Campbell (200, 400), Maya Carter (400), LaQuisha Jackson (100, 200), Renetia James (400), Josefine Koskinen (800), Chelsea Kruthers (800), Thoraya Maronsey (triple jump), Lily Mayko (400 hurdles), Jessica McCall (1,500), Deyna Roberson (400 hurdles), Rachel Roesgen (1,500), Hannah Sawatzki (5,000), Maderia Toatley (200) and Melissa Wendorf (5,000).
SDSU still has plenty of athletes ranked among the top 48 in the NCAA West Region (the top 48 in every individual event but the heptathlon (top 24 in the country go directly to the NCAA Championships) and the top-24 relays will advance to the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Meet in Austin, Texas, from May 23-25) heading into this weekend's meet. Shanieka Thomas is ranked second in the triple jump, Kristen Brown is seventh in the pole vault and 19th in the 100-meter hurdles, Allison Reaser is 13th in the 400 hurdles and 24th in the 100 hurdles, Kelsy Hintz is 16th in the pole vault, Nicole Oudenaarden is 18th in the long jump and 37th in the javelin throw, Jasmine Burrell is 22nd in the discus throw, Alex Evans is 25th in the triple jump, Brittany Bozeman is 34th in the long jump, Deyna Roberson is 35th in the 400 hurdles and Karen Snapper is 36th in the pole vault. Oudenaarden, meanwhile, is ranked fourth in the nation in the heptathlon and Allison Reaser is 11th.
San Diego State is coming of a successful weekend at the Penn Relays and Triton Invitational, most notably Thomas' win in the triple jump championships in Philadelphia. Thomas jumped 44 feet, 8 inches (13.61 meters) to capture the elite title by more than a foot over Texas A&M runner-up LaQue Moen-Davis, who is currently ranked fourth in the country. Thomas was named the Mountain West Women's Co-Athlete of the Week for her efforts.
The Mountain West Championships are slated for May 8-11 in Las Vegas, Nev.
