RENO, Nev. -

The University of Nevada track and field team will head to Las Vegas, Nev., to participate in the 2013 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The event will be hosted by UNLV at Sheila Tarr Smith Field at Myron Partridge Stadium beginning Wednesday, May 8th and concluding Saturday, May 11th. Nevada finished third at the 2013 Mountain West Indoor Championships earlier this season.

“Our goal this week is for everyone to have their best meet four days in a row,” head coach Shantel Twiggs said. “We have a great opportunity in front of us and we must capitalize on every chance we get.”

The team ended the regular outdoor season with a solid showing at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. Senior Christy Works won the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.73. Sophomore Anita Momodu won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.00 seconds, just .03 seconds off of her personal best mark, which is in the Mountain West top ten this season.

Nevada took seventh place at the 2012 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships last season. Senior Deborah Amoah finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 12.48m (40-11.50). Amoah also finished second in the long jump with a mark of 6.00m (19'8.25). The senior qualified for the finals in the 100m hurdles with a mark of 14.06, which is the eighth best mark in school history.

The program has seen its fair share or records broken during the 2013 outdoor season. Deborah Amoah climbed her way to the top of Nevada’s triple jump list, finishing in first place with a record-breaking mark of 42’7 in the triple jump at the Hornet Invitational. Amoah is currently ranked No. 8 in the NCAA West Region and No. 16 nationally in the triple jump. Junior Kerri Simmons claimed the program’s record in the shot put, throwing a first place mark of 51’1.75 at the Cal-Nevada Championships. The Wolf Pack 4x100 relay quartet comprised of Samantha Calhoun, Angelica Earls, Tanisha Hawkins, and Kashae Knox shattered Nevada’s program record in front of a national audience at the Drake Relays to take fourth. The team has had many members join the program’s all-time list and achieve many personal bests.
