May 13, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — 19 University of New Mexico track and field athletes were selected to the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field All-Conference men's and women's teams on Monday. All-MW selections are awarded to the top three finishers in each event at last weekend's MW Outdoor Championships.
The Lobos, who received a runner-up finish from the women and a third-place finish from the men, combined for the most All-MW selections since earning 27 in 2011. For the men, seven individuals claimed 10 total honors, while nine women and a relay team scored 12 total selections.
Leading the group of recipients for the New Mexico men were the seven individual champions.
Titlists Luke Caldwell (5000-meter run, 10000), Elmar Engholm (3000 steeplechase, 1500) and Alex Herring (800, 1500) all collected multiple honors for their performances, while Kendall Spencer (long jump), Django Lovett (high jump) and Floyd Ross (triple jump) also nabbed All-MW plaudits for their victories.
Patrick Zacharias (5000) rounded out the men’s honorees.
The 10 All-MW selections garnered by the men are the fewest since 2009 (also 10), but continues a five-year streak of earning double-digit selections.
On the women's side, Josephine Moultrie's two victories led the women to 12 all-conference honors.
Moultrie was recognized in the 800 and 1500, and was one of 11 women in the conference to receive two individual All-MW selections.
Also receiving selections were Chloe Anderson (1500), Charlotte Arter (1500), Tawsha Brazley (4x400 meter relay), Zoe Howell (4x400) Jasmin McCray (4x400), Amber Menke (pole vault), Shirley Pitts (400, 4x400), Marin Schweigert (high jump), Margo Tucker (pole vault), Yeshemabet Turner (long jump, triple jump), and Shawna Winnegar (5000, 10000).
The 12 all-conference nods for the Lobo women ties the highest total indoors, 12 selections recorded in 2011.
