Eight T&F Aztecs Qualify for NCAA Prelims
May 17, 2012
SAN DIEGO -
San Diego State had eight athletes qualify for the NCAA Track and Field Preliminary Rounds and Allison Reaser earned a spot in the NCAA Championships, the USTFCCCA announced today.
The eight Aztecs qualified for the preliminary championships by being a top-48 declared athlete in the west region. The top-12 finishers in each event at the west preliminary rounds, which will take place May 24-26 in Austin, Texas, will then qualify for the NCAA championship meet in Des Moines, Iowa (June 6-9).
Reaser, meanwhile, officially became the first SDSU athlete to qualify for the championship meet as her winning heptathlon total of 5,653 points at the Mountain West Championships is the 11th best in the country this year. Unlike the other events, there is no regional qualifier for the heptathlon, since it is a grueling, two-day competition. Instead, the top-24 declared heptathletes in the nation, regardless of region, earn the right to participate in Des Moines.
Reaser is still going to Austin, however, as she qualified and declared in the 400-meter hurdles (58.37), where she is seeded 17th.
Shanieka Thomas has the best ranking heading into the regional meet as she is second in the triple jump with a mark of 43-11.25. She will be joined in the event by Alex Evans, who is tied for 40th at 40-09.50.
Whitney Ashley is into the meet in two events, ranked fifth in the discus throw (183-01) and 10th in the shot put (54-01.00). Jasmine Burrell also qualified in both events and is 16th in the discus (177-03) and tied for 41st in the shot put (49-06.25).
Finally, Josefine Koskinen earned a spot as San Diego State's lone non-hurdle runner. She qualified in the 800, where she is ranked 31st in the region with a time of 2:07.87.
