LARAMIE, Wyo. - Eleven Wyoming track and field athletes were selected to compete at the NCAA West Preliminary this week from May 23-25 in Austin, Texas.
Competing at the University of Texas' Mike A. "The first big goal for them this year was to make it to this point," said Wyoming coach Bryan Berryhill. "Now that they're here, they just need to compete with no fear and go in relaxed. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain by just going in relaxed and ready to give it our best."
To reach the preliminary, an athlete must be ranked in the Top 48 of his/her respective event(s). The top 12 finishers for each event at the preliminary receive an invitation to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which take place June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore. Field events begin at 11 a.m. MT each day, while running events begin toward the conclusion of the field events.

Thomas is ranked 20th nationally and 12th in the west for the event, while Plante is 31st nationally and the 18th seed for the region. Leonce will compete in the long jump at 12:30 p.m., while Daniels will compete in the women's hammer throw at 1 p.m. For these events, the 16 best marks will qualify from the first round of three preliminary attempts to the final round of three tries. The top 12 advance to Eugene.
