NEW ORLEANS - The San Diego State track and field team is ranked 24th in the country heading into next weekend's (June 6-9) NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship finals in Des Moines, Iowa, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced today.

The Aztecs have 80.11 points, just behind 23rd-ranked Southern Miss (81.46) and ahead of the Mountain West champion TCU (79.81). SDSU is up 13 spots from last week's computer rankings, the biggest leap by any team in the current top 25. LSU tops the list with 349.89 points.

The latest USTFCCCA National Team Rankings show the top teams in the country and are based on results from the NCAA Preliminary Rounds last weekend in Austin, Texas (west region) and Jacksonville, Fla. (east region), respectively.

The purpose and methodology of the national team computer rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national title race - not as a method to compare teams head-to-head. San Diego State will have five individuals competing at the NCAA Championships (finals) next weekend in Des Moines, including Whitney Ashley in both the discus throw and the shot put. Alex Evans (triple jump), Kelsy Hintz (pole vault), Allison Reaser (heptathlon) and Shanieka Thomas (triple jump) also qualified for the NCAA finals in their respective events. Only 21 schools in the country have more entrants than the Aztecs' six.
