Mountain West Announces Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athletes of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico junior Luke Caldwell and San Diego State junior Shanieka Thomas have been selected as the 2013 Mountain West Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athletes of the Year, respectively.

Caldwell, from Betchworth, England, won the 5000 Meters (14:30.00) and 10,000 Meters (30:27.71) at the 2013 MW Outdoor Championships, helping the Lobos to a second-place finish in the team standings. He earned first-team All-American status thanks to his solid showing at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., where he placed seventh in the 5000 Meters with a time of 13:55.55.

A native of St. Andrew, Jamaica, Thomas won a national championship in the Triple Jump with a leap of 46'-4.75'' (14.14m) at the 2013 NCAA Championships, besting 23 competitors in the process. The junior earned her second straight first team All-American honor by virtue of her national title. Thomas possesses the nation's best Triple Jump this season after posting a 46'-5.25'' (14.15) at the 2013 MW Outdoor Championships. The mark established new championship and all-time records in the Conference. In addition, she also won the Long Jump (20'-7.50'') and was part of the Aztecs' winning 4x400 Relay squad (3:35.41) at the MW Championships. Thomas' contributions not only helped lead the No. 23 Aztecs to their first MW team title in 10 years, but earned her the meet's Outstanding Performer award.

Caldwell and Thomas were the 2012-13 Indoor Track & Field Student-Athletes of the Year.

The Student-Athlete of the Year award recognizes the outstanding male and female athletes in the sport of outdoor track and field. Student-athletes are nominated and selected by the head coaches at each member institution.
