Caldwell Selected as MW Student-Athlete of the Year, Sweeps Awards

June 13, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — University of New Mexico track and field athlete Luke Caldwell has been named the Mountain West Men's Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year Thursday.

Caldwell earned honors at the conference and national level in his debut outdoor track and field season for the Lobos, culminating in an All-American performance at the NCAA Championships and a sweep of the conference student-athlete awards.

The junior from Betchworth, England, placed seventh in the men's 5,000-meter run last week at the NCAA Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing in 13 minutes, 55.55 seconds.

For that performance, he was accorded the honor of First-Team All-American by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Along with his All-American nods from cross-country and indoor track, Caldwell is first male athlete in program history to earn All-American selections in cross-country, indoor and outdoor track one school year.

Caldwell also won two events at the 2013 MW Outdoor Championships in early May, pacing the New Mexico men to a third-place team finish.

He claimed the conference crowns in the 5000 and 10000, running to times of 14:30.00 and 30:27.71, respectively. Subsequently, he earned two All-Mountain West selections.

Caldwell also set the New Mexico record in the outdoor 5K. His clocking of 13:29.94, which he recorded on May 28, 2013 at the Payton Jordan Invitational, finished as the third-fastest time outdoors in the NCAA this year.

Caldwell is the second UNM athlete to receive recognition as the MW Outdoor Student-Athlete of the Year. Lee Emanuel took home the honor in 2010 after winning the conference crown in the 1,500.

In March, Caldwell was also selected as the conference’s Indoor Student-Athlete of the Year, making him just the second MW athlete (along with Emanuel in 2010) to sweep the MW Student-Athlete of the Year selections in a single year.

The Student-Athlete of the Year award recognizes the outstanding male and female athletes in the sport of outdoor track and field. Student-athletes are nominated and selected by the head coaches at each member institution.

San Diego State junior Shanieka Thomas was selected for the women, replicating her selection from the indoor season, as well.
