Olympic Track and Field Update

LONDON - Jenny Simpson, a volunteer coach for the Air Force track and field team, advanced to the semifinals of the 1500-meter run the 2012 Olympic Games in London this morning, after earning the final automatic qualifying spot of her heat.
Clocking a time of 4:13.81, Simpson finished sixth in the second heat and 24th overall in the 45-runner preliminary round. The top six finishers from each of the three heats, as well as the next six fastest runners regardless of heat, advanced to the 24-runner semifinal round. Running in 10th at the final turn, Simpson sprinted toward the finish line to capture the final automatic qualifying spot.
Simpson, the reigning world champion in the 1500-meter event who is coached by the Falcons' distance coach Juli Benson, returns to action on Wednesday, Aug. 8, for the semifinal round at 7:45 p.m. in London (12:45 p.m., Mountain time).
