FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women’s indoor track and field team is set to open its 2012-13 season this Friday as they will travel to Colorado Springs for the Air Force Holiday Open.
The meet gets underway at 2 p.m., with the throwing events. The pole vault, long jump and high jump are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and the running events, which will run on a rolling schedule, will start at 4 p.m.
The ’Dogs are embarking on its earliest start to its indoor season under fifth-year head coach Scott Windsor as this weekend is the first opportunity the NCAA allows competition. Coach Windsor finds this as a unique time for his team to see how well its training has paid off throughout the fall.
“This event does two things, it allows us to gauge where we are in our training and it’s an excellent opportunity to see where we stack up against the Mountain West,” said Windsor. “I think we’re all excited to compete against new teams at new locations and venues.”
Names to watch out for early on this season [in alphabetical order] are Caitlin Byrd (throws), Fabrina Espinoza (sprints/jumps), AnaManu Folau (throws), Meagan McKee (throws), J’Quyra Moncur-Blue (throws), Je’Nia Sears (jumps) and Breeauna Thompson (sprints).
“We’re really looking forward to watching Fabrina [Espinoza], she jumped real well at the Turkey Trials [Nov. 16] from six contacts,” said Windsor. “Je’Nia Sears is a very talented young woman too, she is going to be a very good long jumper for us.”
The women’s indoor team will travel 15 in total to Colorado and as most all teams do, senior leadership will be counted on at this first event and moving forward.
“We’ve had a good fall and we’re going out there with expectations, especially from the seniors,” said Windsor. “They know what it’s all about, they know why we train.” “We can go out there, get some good marks and qualify for the NCAA’s.”
