Track and Field Opens Season Hosting Power Meet

Dec. 5, 2012

LARAMIE, Wyo. - A year after sending 12 athletes to the NCAA West Preliminaries and two achieving MW outdoor individual titles, the Wyoming track and field teams begin the 2012-13 indoor season with the Power Meet Friday evening at War Memorial Fieldhouse.

The meet begins at 4 p.m. with field events as Wyoming hosts Northern Colorado and select athletes from West Texas A&M.

"The team is excited for competition and to see our progress from offseason training and conditioning," said first-year head coach Bryan Berryhill. "They've put in a lot of time over the summer and fall to prepare themselves for this season. I think their hard work will show throughout the year."

The Power Meet will feature all field events and hurdles and sprints on the track side. It will also cover the 600-meter run and end with the 4x400-meter relays at approximately 7:15 p.m.

Both squads look to improve on a 2011-12 season in which the Cowboys placed sixth at the MW Indoor Championships and the Cowgirls placed eighth. Last year's outdoor MW discus champion, Joe Plante, will sit out the indoor season due to expired eligibility while 10,000-meter MW champion Nick Ekel will not compete Friday as the meet will not feature long distance runs.

Berryhill looks to last season's NCAA outdoor qualifiers Plante, Ekel, Garrett Zans, Lenyn Leonce, Candace Wollert, Henry Ferreira, Paul Thomas and Mollie Dahl to lead this year's team.

"We have great leadership returning this season, so I hope everything goes well for us Friday and that we can start strong working toward our goals for this year," Berryhill said.
