MADISON, Wisc. – The CSU men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to Madison, Wisconsin Friday for the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational, their second straight meet against national competition. Dubbed the “toughest meet of the year before the NCAA Championships” by CSU cross country coach Art Siemers, the invitational featured 46 men’s teams and 49 women’s teams from across the country, many of which were nationally ranked coming into the meet.
Senior CSU runner Holly Keeper finished the 6-kilometer women’s race in 20 minutes and 43 seconds, earning her the top time on the women’s squad and a 79th place finish overall. This was her second straight meet with the top time on the CSU team. Following Keeper was junior Whitney Henderson, who finished in 21 minutes even. Junior Hannah Pensack-Rinehart, running in her second meet of the season, finished four seconds behind Henderson, clocking in at 21:04. Junior Kaitlin Hanenburg, two meets removed from her first collegiate cross country win, finished the 6-kilometer race with a time of 21:20.
On the men’s side, junior Alex Muntefering once again finished with the top time for the Rams, clocking in at 24 minutes, 12 seconds for the 8-kilometer race. It was his third consecutive meet in which he earned the top time on the CSU men’s cross country team. Following Muntefering were three Rams finishing within four seconds of each other – Andrew Goodman at 24:31, Ben Larson at 24:33, and Jacob Morgan at 24:35. Rounding out the top 5 CSU times was junior Christian Meyer, who finished the race in 24:48. The Rams’ pack split was a promising 36 seconds.
Overall, the men’s team took 33rd in the field of 46 while the women’s team finished 34th in the field of 49. The high level of competition served as great experience and preparation for the CSU runners as they look to contend for high finishes at the upcoming MW Championships.
The Colorado State men’s and women’s cross country teams will next compete at the Mountain West Cross Country Championships on Oct. 26 at the University of Nevada – Las Vegas.
