New Mexico Men & Women Selected as Favorites to Win 2012 MW Cross Country Titles

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The New Mexico men's and women's cross country teams were selected to win the 2012 Mountain West titles, respectively, in a vote by the league's coaches released on Monday.

New Mexico collected four first place votes and 24 total points to capture the top spot in the men's poll, while Air Force (one first-place vote) tallied 21 points to earn second-place honors. Boise State claimed the third position with one first-place vote and 17 total points, while Colorado State finished fourth with 12 points. Wyoming (nine points) and Fresno State (seven points) rounded out the poll, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. The Lobos, under the direction of head coach Joe Franklin, are ranked No. 2 in the USTFCCCA Mountain Region in the preseason regional poll, also released on Monday.

The New Mexico women's team, ranked No. 5 in the Mountain Region in the 2012 USTFCCCA Preseason Poll, received seven first-place votes and gathered a score of 63 points to earn the top position in the women's poll. Boise State (one first-place vote) was selected to finish second with 54 points. Colorado State claimed the third spot with a first-place vote and 48 points, followed by Air Force, which finished in fourth place with 43 points. Wyoming finished fifth (39 points), while Fresno State and UNLV tied for sixth with 23 points each. Nevada (21 points) and San Diego State (10 points) rounded out the final two positions at eighth and ninth, respectively.

The New Mexico men's and women's cross country teams swept the 2011 Mountain West Cross Country Championships hosted by Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo. The 2012 MW Cross Country Championships will be hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. on Oct. 26. The USTFCCCA National Poll is scheduled for release on Tuesday, Aug. 28.
