Aug. 27, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico men’s and women’s cross country teams were selected as the favorites to win their respective 2012 Mountain West cross country titles as voted by the league’s coaches. The vote, released Monday, marks the second straight year both teams were picked to sweep the conference championships.
The New Mexico men’s squad seized the top spot in the preseason poll by earning 24 points and 4 first-place votes. Air Force scored one first-place vote and 21 total points to place second, while Boise State registered the final first-place vote and 17 total points en route to claiming third. Colorado State (12 points), Wyoming (9 points) and Fresno State (7 points) rounded out the six-team poll, placing fourth-sixth, respectively.
The Lobo men were also ranked second in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mountain Region preseason poll, which was also released Monday.
On the women’s side, the Lobos captured seven first-place votes and 63 total points to earn the top position in the women’s poll. Boise State took second behind one first-place vote and 54 points, just edging out third-place Colorado State and its single first-place vote and 48 points. Air Force placed fourth with 43 points and was followed by Wyoming’s 39 points for fifth. Fresno State and UNLV tied for sixth with 23 points, while Nevada (eighth, 21 points) and San Diego State (ninth, 10 points) rounded out the ten-team poll.
Like the men, the women also were ranked in the USTFCCCA’s Mountain Region preseason poll, placing fifth.
Both squads pulled off a sweep of the 2011 Mountain West Cross Country Championships hosted by Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo. The women notched their fourth straight conference title while the men tallied a three-peat. They will aim for another conference crown at the 2012 MW Cross Country Championships, which will be hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. on Oct. 26.
But before the Lobos can vie for conference supremacy, they will kick off the 2012 season hosting the 2012 Lobo Cross Country Invitational on Friday at the University of New Mexico North Golf Course.
