COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Kaitlin Hanenburg finished first in the women's  5-kilometer race and Alex Muntefering third in the men's 5-kilometer race last Friday at the Colorado State Open. As a result of their successes, both athletes received Mountain West Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors Tuesday.

Hanenburg, a junior, recorded her first career collegiate win at the Hughes Stadium course. She finished in 18:06.9, almost seven seconds in front of any other women's runner. Hanenburg is the first CSU women's runner to earn the honor since Nicole Peters in September of 2011.

Muntefering, also a junior, finished the home course in 15:29.7 and placed third. He was the first Ram to cross the finish line in the men's race, and it was also the highest finish in his career.

The last CSU men's runner to win the honor was Jeremy Freed on Sept. 26, 2006. Hanenburg and Muntefering will lead the CSU cross country squad at the Greater Lousville Classic in Lousville, Ky. on Sept. 29.
