Cross Country Duo Claim MW Weekly Honors
Oct. 2, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico’s nationally ranked cross country teams garnered two conference honors Tuesday, as Josephine Moultrie and Luke Caldwell earned recognition from the Mountain West for their performances in races contested from Sept. 17-30, 2012.
Moultrie was selected for her first Mountain West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honor, while Caldwell earned MW Men’s Cross Country Co-Athlete of the Week, the first in his career.
“It’s a great honor for both those guys,” said New Mexico Head Coach Joe Franklin. “It’s the first ever for Josephine and first ever for Luke and I think that it sets them up well going into the final month of the season through the conference championships.”
Moultrie placed fourth at the highly-competitive Notre Dame Invitational over the weekend with a 5-kilometer time of 16:46. The senior from Glasgow, Scotland, posted the fastest 5K time in the MW this season en route to leading the 19th-ranked Lobos to a third-place team finish.
Caldwell, a junior transfer from Betchworth, England, also posted a strong showing at Notre Dame, placing 12th with a 5-mile time of 23:59. In his first collegiate race, Caldwell led No. 28 New Mexico to a team finish of sixth.
Air Force junior Isaiah Bragg shared the honor with Caldwell.
The pair’s honors are the first MW athlete of the week selection for New Mexico since Nicholas Kipruto earned the men’s honor on Oct. 4, 2011. Moultrie’s selection is the first for the women since Nicky Archer’s recognition on Oct. 21, 2008.
