Coach E Tracks The Pack

RENO, Nev. -
The Nevada Wolf Pack took the sting out of the Sacramento State Hornets on Friday at the Nevada Chase Relay, winning a uniquely formatted relay cross country race, 23-32. Competitors each raced segments of a 2 mile, a ½ mile, a mile, and a half mile again. Times were added together for each athlete to create a 4 mile result.
On a beautiful, mild morning, Sam Diaz’s combination of aerobic strength and anaerobic power were on full display. The smooth striding junior cruised to a comfortable win recording the fastest split in each segment, her ease belying both the 4700+ feet of elevation and notoriously slow, rough footing at Rancho San Rafael Park. Rapidly improving sophomore Demerey Kirsch finished second, 19 seconds back, with solid legs in each segment.
Due to the relay format there was a real see-saw effect during the race with some of the slower runners starting their legs out front due to their faster partners. This provide some unique stimulus and several athletes responded well to their front running status. Junior Amber Karnofel and senior Nicole Painter, neither known to be strong kickers, threw down ferocious kicks defending their high standing in the race. Freshman Emily Myers, aka EmK, a 5000 meter runner on the track, almost matched middle distance specialist Diaz’s final ½ mile, running only a second slower.
The two mile was run Chase Race style with athletes starting in waves based on previous performances. Slower athletes started first with a second wave starting 30 seconds later and a top group a minute behind the initial group. This made for a two mile finish that was relatively close. The number one runners in each relay then had a three minute recovery before starting the first ½ mile segment. Athletes were teamed based on their respective team rank going into the event. The No. 1 was partnered with No. 8, No. 2 with No. 7, No. 3 with No. 6, and No. 4 with No. 5.
