Nevada Cross Country Travels to MW Championships
Oct. 24, 2012
RENO, Nev. -
The University of Nevada cross country team will travel to the 2012 Mountain West Women’s Cross Country Championships that will be held on Friday, Oct. 26 at Silver Bowl Park in Las Vegas, Nev. The women’s 6-kilometer race will begin at 10 a.m. PT. The No. 17 New Mexico team has won the last four championships.
“The Mountain West is a very deep conference in cross country,” head coach Kirk Elias said. “Out of the nine teams, seven have really good squads. Though New Mexico seems the clear favorite on paper, and Colorado State is favored for second, I expect it to be an intense battle. We are ready to run our best race of the season and look forward to being the first Nevada sport to compete for a Mountain West Conference Championship. Friday will be exciting!”
Nevada has had a solid 2012 campaign, finishing first at the Nevada Chase Race and Chase Rally earlier this year. In the Nature’s Bakery Twilight Classic, the Wolf Pack competed against 29th ranked national power (and 3rd regionally) BYU, regionally ranked Utah (6th), and in-state and conference foe UNLV in the collegiate open race which was one of 11 races conducted as a part of the Twilight event.
The team finished second at the event, led by junior Samantha Diaz who won the individual honors with a first place finish. Diaz set a new course record with a time of 14:32 in the 4,000 meter race. The junior broke the previous record of 14:41 that was set by Utah's Alyssa Abbott during the 2011 season.
Results from the meet will be available immediately following the final race of the day at NevadaWolfPack.com.
