New Mexico Men's Cross Country Team Earns At-Large Bid to 2012 NCAA National Championship

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The No. 16 New Mexico men's cross country team received an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA Division I Championship after placing fourth at the Mountain Regional at Collindale Golf Course in Fort Collins, Colo., on Friday, joining the No. 17 Lobo women's team as the only Mountain West teams advancing to the finals on Saturday, Nov. 17.
The University of Louisville will host the Championships at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The women's 6-kilometer race will begin at noon ET, followed by the men's 10K race at 1:15 p.m. ET. Both races will be streamed live on NCAA.com.
New Mexico, the 2012 MW champion, scored 108 points on Friday. 2012 MW men's individual champion Luke Caldwell was the first Lobo to the finish with a 12th-place time of 30:21.9 with the next four point-scorers finishing in the top 31. Sophomore Pat Zacharias placed 18th (30:36.0), followed by junior Sean Stam in 22nd (30:48.7), junior Adam Bitchell in 25th (30:52.7) and junior Sam Evans in 31st (31:01.5).
The Lobo women's team is making its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championships and ninth finals trip, including two trips to the AIAW championships. UNM finished ninth last year, fifth in 2010, 13th in 2009 and 18th in 2008 in the latest string of appearances under head coach Joe Franklin.
The UNM men are making their eighth championship appearance and fourth in a row. The Lobos finished 31st last year, 16th in 2010 and posted a program-best tie for eighth in 2009.
