FRESNO, Calif. --- Bulldogs' starting pitcher Tim Borst dealt six shutout innings and Preseason All-American Aaron Judge went 3-for-4 with a monster home run, but the Fresno State baseball team dropped its season-opening series to UC Santa Barbara as the Bulldogs lost 11-3 to the Gauchos on Sunday at Beiden Field.

Borst, a freshman out of Moreno Valley, was making his Fresno State debut and delivered what two-time National Coach of the Year Mike Batesole called the best start of the weekend for the 'Dogs.

Borst scattered just four hits and struck out four in his scoreless effort from the hill that featured the freshman righthander retiring 10 straight UCSB hitters at one point.

Meanwhile offensively, Judge gave Fresno State an early lead when he ripped a first-inning RBI double, that was followed immediately by a Trent Garrison's RBI single to plate Judge for a 2-0 lead over the Gauchos after one.

While Borst was shutting down the Gauchos, the Bulldogs remained up by two until the seventh when UC Santa Barbara quickly jumped on the Fresno State bullpen and sent 12 batters to the plate. UCSB scored eight times in the frame, but just four were earned before a Fresno State error prevented the inning from ending.

Judge answered in the bottom of the eighth with a rocket launch of a one-out home run over Beiden Field's left field scoreboard that still might be flying into orbit to cut the Bulldogs' deficit to five, but UCSB added three more runs in the ninth to secure the eight-run victory.

Fresno State (1-2) wraps up its four-game season-opening homestand when the Bulldogs host Sacramento State (1-2) on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. PT in a showdown between the two schools that squared off in last year's conference tournament championship game.
