Carman, Relievers Combine to Shutout Islanders 7-0
Feb. 22, 2013
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS - The University of New Mexico baseball team (2-2) shutout the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (3-3) 7-0 Friday night in both team's first game of the Klerberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field. Lobo starter A.J. Carman was excellent throughout tossing seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing four hits, one walk, and striking out three while earning the first win of his career.
Carman was only in trouble twice. Once was in the second when he worked around a one-out error and bunt single. Then in the fourth the Islanders had two men on base with one out, but Carman got the next two batters out via a strikeout and a groundout, respectively. Over his last three innings he faced the minimum nine batters.
Seniors Gabe Aguilar and Hobie McClain came out of the bullpen to finish the shutout as they combined to allow only one hit over the last two innings. Lobo pitchers were at their best when men were on base as they held the Islanders to one hit in 13 chances with runners were on base. They were even better once runners reached scoring position as they heled TAMU-CC hitless in 10 at bats in those situations.
The Lobos struck early scoring two runs in the top of the first. Senior Josh Melendez led the game off
with a triple to centerfield, which was followed by a one-out intentional walk to DJ Peterson, his fourth
walk in as many games. Mitch Garver then singled to left to score Melendez. Garver is now 4-for-4 with six RBI when batting after a Peterson intentional walk.
The second run of the opening frame came when Alex Real reached base on an error by the Islander’s second basemen, which allowed Peterson to score. Peterson finished the game 0-3 with two runs scored.
The Lobos added three more in the top of the third. Luke Campbell recorded his fourth RBI of the season with a double down the left field line scoring Peterson from first. Later in the inning junior transfer Chase Harris singled up the middle to knock home both Campbell and Real.
In the fourth a Campbell groundout scored Ryan Padilla making the score 6-0, Campbell finished the
game 1-5 with two RBI and a run scored. In the fifth, the Lobos tacked on their seventh run when Harris
reached by on an error and later scored on a passed ball.
Melendez, Real, and Alex Allbritton all recorded two hits to lead UNM. Allbritton, despite playing with a still-healing broken right index finger is now hitting .455 on the season to lead the team.
The Lobos will face Iowa tomorrow, Saturday, at 1 pm MT for their second game of the Classic with junior lefty Kevin Baumgartner getting the start on the mound.
Notes: The Lobos finished the game with 10 hits but only two were for extra bases ... the Lobo infielders were busy as their pitchers generated 15 groundouts compared to only seven flyouts ... Harris' two RBI in the third were the first of his career.
